AGX 2026: Connecting Communities Through Applied Geography
The Applied Geography Conference invites researchers, practitioners, educators, students, public-sector professionals, industry partners, and community organizations to submit abstracts for AGX 2026.
AGX 2026 will use a blended format that combines the benefits of face-to-face interaction with the accessibility of online participation. The conference will take place in two complementary parts.
Part I: In-Person Community Gathering November 5–6, 2026 University of Pittsburgh Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
The in-person meeting will emphasize professional networking, collaboration, mentoring, workshops, discussion, and community building. Registration for the in-person meeting also includes access to the virtual component of the conference.
Part II: Virtual Research Conference November 12–13, 2026 Online
The virtual conference will provide an accessible forum for presenting research, applied projects, teaching innovations, technical developments, and professional experiences to an international audience. Registration for the virtual conference also includes access to the in-person component.
Conference Scope
AGX 2026 welcomes contributions that demonstrate how geographic knowledge, spatial methods, geospatial technologies, and interdisciplinary collaboration can be applied to contemporary social, environmental, economic, and technological challenges.
Submissions may present completed research, work in progress, applied case studies, methodological advances, educational innovations, professional practices, or collaborative initiatives. Contributions that connect geographic theory with practical applications are particularly encouraged.
Conference Themes
Authors should submit their abstract under the theme that most closely aligns with their contribution.

Interdisciplinary submissions that span multiple themes are welcome. Authors should select the single theme that best represents the primary focus of their submission.
Submission Types
The following submission types are available.
Paper Presentation Paper presentations report original research, applied analysis, methodological developments, teaching innovations, or professional projects. Presentations will be organized into moderated thematic sessions.
Poster Presentation Posters provide a visual format for presenting research findings, works in progress, applied projects, datasets, methods, and educational or professional initiatives.
Roundtable or Panel Discussion Roundtables and panels provide structured opportunities to discuss a defined issue, emerging area, policy question, methodological challenge, or professional concern. Proposals should identify the central topic, intended participants, and format for audience engagement.
Student Paper Competition Students may submit research papers for consideration in the AGX 2026 Student Paper Competition. The student must be the primary author and presenter.
Student Poster Competition Students may submit posters for consideration in the AGX 2026 Student Poster Competition. The student must be the primary author and presenter.
Workshop Workshop proposals should describe an interactive session designed to develop specific knowledge or skills. Proposals should identify the intended audience, learning objectives, session structure, required technology or materials, and expected outcomes.
Abstract Requirements
Abstracts should be no more than 300 words and should clearly state:
- The problem, question, or topic addressed.
- The objectives of the research, project, session, or workshop.
- The data, methods, or approach used, where applicable.
- Principal findings, anticipated findings, or expected outcomes.
- The contribution to applied geography or related fields.
Each submission must also include:
- Submission title.
- Author names and institutional or organizational affiliations.
- Contact information for the corresponding author.
- Selected conference theme.
- Selected submission type.
- Preferred participation format (in person or online).
- Three to five keywords.
Abstracts should not contain tables, figures, citations, or reference lists.
Participation Format
Authors must indicate whether they propose to participate in the in-person conference, the virtual conference, or both.
Submission Process
Abstracts must be submitted through the AGX 2026 Indico submission system:

Authors will be asked to:
- Create an Indico account (including returning users).
- Enter the submission title and abstract.
- Add all authors and affiliations.
- Select a conference theme.
- Select a submission type.
- Indicate the preferred participation format.
- Provide keywords and any additional information requested for the selected submission type.
Important Dates
- Abstract submissions open: July 10, 2026
- Abstract submission deadline: October 12, 2026
- In-person conference: November 5–6, 2026
- Virtual conference: November 12–13, 2026
At least one author of each accepted submission must register for the conference and present the contribution in the assigned format.
